The Sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord by J.S. Bach (1685-1750) were milestones for the low-register string instruments' repertoire. Unlike most of Bach's chamber music, those three sonatas don't form a unified cycle but exist individually. The first sonata is a transcription of an earlier Sonata for two flutes and basso continuo BWV1039.
