Johann Sebastian Bach composed the cantata in C minor BWV 82 for Purification Day, February 2, 1727, in Leipzig, with an anonymous libretto. With its unusual instrumentation, a bass soloist accompanied by an oboe, strings and continuo, the work evokes the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. The first aria "Ich habe genug" ("I am content") relates Simeon's call to a peaceful death after holding the young Christ in his arms.
