Beethoven (1770-1827) wrote sixteen quartets, and dedicated the first six, gathered in Op. 18, to Prince Lobkowitz, who was one of his most fervent admirers and supporters. The Opus 18 No. 3, the first of the six by chronological order, is contemporary of the "Pathétique" sonata. It is the composer's first masterpiece in the quartet repertoire.
