If Beethoven never dedicated a concerto to the cello, he composed five cello and piano sonatas, among which the third one, the opus 69 written in 1808, certainly is the most popular. In this third sonata, composed almost 10 years after the first two, the pathetic mood was replaced with lyricism (maybe under the influence of the “Pastoral” Symphony, which was written in the same years), and balance was found between both instruments.
