Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the second son of Johann Sebastian Bach to survive into adulthood. For nearly thirty years, he was harpsichordist in Frederick the Great's court. He was then appointed Director Musices in Hamburg, freeing himself from the conservative musical tastes that prevailed at court. The "Hamburger Sonata" was composed in 1786, a transition period between the Baroque and Classical periods.
