In 1909, Claude Debussy, then a recognised composer, was engaged by Gabriel Fauré, head of the Paris Conservatory, to his high council. As such, one of his missions was to compose pieces for competitions. Between December 1909 and January 1910, he wrote this rhapsody for the 1910 clarinet competition. A version for orchestra also exists.
