François-Joseph Gossec (1734-1829), actually named Gossé, was a French composer and Haydn’s contemporary. Close to the French heads of state, he worked for the French royal family, the Prince de Condé and the Prince de Conti, before joining the Revolution as official composer, later becoming one of the most praised musicians under Napoleon Bonaparte.
