Composed by Haendel in 1736 to celebrate the wedding of the Prince of Wales, Atalanta is based on an anonymous libretto from "La Caccia in Etolia" by Belisario Valeriani. The work is one of Handel's only two operas of a "pastoral" nature and tells how King Meleager, disguised as a shepherd, seduces Atalanta, Princess of Arcadia and hunting enthusiast.
