Édouard Lalo was a French composer (1823-1892). He entered the Lille Conservatory in 1833, where he learned the Violin and then, in 1839, left for Paris to continue his musical studies, against his father's advice. He was the Viola, and then the second Violin of the Armengaud Quartet from its foundation in 1856. Contemporary with Bizet's Carmen, his Spanish Symphony for Violin and orchestra is one of the first French orchestral works to use Spanish folklore and its dance rhythms. To date, it is still considered a standard for the Violin repertoire.
