About : Undeniably one of Schubert’s most famous pieces, this Ave Maria is a strophic lied (the three stanzas are bases on the same melody). Surprisingly, it did not originate from the Catholic prayer but from a German translation of the Hymn to Mary sang by a fictional character, Ellen Douglas, in Sir Walter Scott poem ‘The Lady of the Lake” (1810).
