Christopher Simpson (c.1602–1669) was an English musician and composer, often referred to for music for the viola da gamba. A ground bass or ground is the equivalent of an ostinato. It can refer to series of notes, or imply that the entire composition is based on that pattern. There are two types of grounds, harmonic and melodic grounds.
