Franz Strauss (1822-1905), father of the more famous Richard Strauss, was also a composer and, especially, a virtuoso horn player. As such, he was first chair and soloist at the Bayreuth Festival and performed the premieres of all of Wagner's operas. He composed several pieces for horn and piano, including the Nocturne, Op. 7, which has become a standard in the repertoire.
