About : Pauline Garcia (1821 - 1910), known as Viardot's wife, was a mezzo soprano singer, daughter of the Spanish tenor Manuel García, one of the creators of the Barber of Seville, and the sister of Maria, also a singer, better known as Maria Malibran.
Pauline Viardot began her musical education at the piano under the guidance of Franz Liszt. She gave her first recital at the age of 16 and made her operatic debut the following year in the role of Desdemona in Rossini's Otello. She had a great career as a singer, and frequented the greatest composers of the time: Berlioz, Saint-Saëns, Gounod, Fauré, etc. She began composing from an early age, and left a few dozen works, notably melodies. Franz Liszt declared that with Pauline Viardot the world had finally found a genius woman composer.
